Success story

The RU Health Technology Centre and the Landspítali University Hospital have for years been at the forefront of the world when it comes to the use of dimensionally printed organs in the preparation of complex surgeries at the Landspítali University Hospital.

By 3D printing the organs of patients in need of surgery, doctors can better prepare for surgery and shorten the time it takes. This increases patient safety. On average, 15 operations have been carried out with the assistance of 3D printing each year in recent years. With the new 3D printer, it is possible to advance further in this area.

The 3D printer can process drawings with extreme precision, and printing error is less than 0.1 millimeters. He can print very complex objects from a variety of materials, e.g. both transparent and coloured, flexible or hard. Among other things, it will be possible to print complex organs from many layers and use different printing materials and colors to increase the usefulness of the organs in operations, research and teaching. The 3D printer is used for a variety of research, testing and teaching at Reykjavík University, at the Landspítali University Hospital and at the University of Iceland. In addition, Össur will use the printer to prepare prototypes.
